About the Handmade House
The Handmade House is a unique 1930’s farm cottage set in a rambling landscape at the foot of the South Downs in Sussex. Set up by New Zealand, sculptor and designer Ralph Levy with the aim of establishing a centre for the visual arts. Throughout the year the house and gardens showcase Ralph’s wonderful furniture, ceramics and garden structures, and in May and December he opens up the house and garden to other artists to exhibit their works. The Handmade House offers you the opportunity to commission and buy beautiful bespoke furniture and objects directly from the makers.
The Brighton Festival and Open House Trail
As two of our major events we open the house to the public during the Brighton Festival in May and as part of the Christmas Open Houses. All the rooms in the house are open and offer you the opportunity to view paintings, ceramics, furniture and lighting within this delightful domestic setting. Outside you can linger in the garden sampling our delicious homemade cakes and lunches; with much of the produce coming from the garden, even the eggs which come from our tame chickens. After lunch, walk through the sculpture trail meandering through farm land where you can find exciting site specific sculptures.
